DVD's won't read!

I bought a pack of 10 DVD + RW to back up all my videos and photos , as at the moment they're on about 40 CD's.

Trouble is even though my drive clearly says DVD it just won't write anything. When I try to copy, an error message says 'windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder.' Does anyone have any ideas? I have replaced the pack to DVD - RW and it's exactly the same. Help please!

does it just say DVD on it, and not DVD Recordable or something similar.

if so it may just be a CD writer and DVD reader only

The first pack that I bought had DVD + RW and I exchanged them today for a DVD - RW, hoping that might work, but the same error message appears.
no not the discs, the drive, if it only say DVD on it's own on the front of it then it is probably only a dvd reader

if it's a DVD writer it will normally say dvd -rw or similar on the front.

The drive says DVD -RW. This is why I imagined it would be ok.
Would it be the make, only this is Memorex and usually I have Packard Bell?
