With 'insert' choose 'symbol' where you can also add various fractions quickly. Make sure the font is set to (normal text) and don't forget that there is a scroll bar on the side to see more.
To type a fraction in ms word, turn on number lock, then
alt +171 =
alt + 172 =
alt + 243 =

Thank you all, the easiest would seem to be 'wildwood' ,and the 'bronners' good for future refarence., I just could not get edengland's to work, but thanks anyway.
With Edenglend's method, you must use the number pad, not the keys that run along the top of the keyboard.

On a desktop machine, the number pad is usually on the right hand side of the keyboard, on a laptop they are in the letters, in a shape similar to a mobile phone keypad.
Edengland's way works for me.... you have to press the Alt key at the same time as typing the numbers (with the numbers lock switched on)... don't type the + sign !

However, when I type 1/2 in Word, it automatically changes 1/2 to - you need to check that you have the AutoCorrectOptions enabled (Tools / Auto Correct Options / Auto Format As You Type tab and click on "Fractions with fraction character").
