Can anyone please explain these answers for me?
26ac Pairing off around mid-afternoon for shooting
The only thing I can think of to fit is germination, which fits in with shooting but what about the rest of the clue? I had been expecting some sort of anagram involving pairing but obviously not.
7dn Supposed reason for an evening out
I have seen the answer given as law of averages,
but I can't figure this out.
I do hate to put an answer without knowing why!

The law of averages states that everything will even itself out in the long run.
7d Law of Averages = Evening Out, as in 'rounding up or down' as distinct from a night at the opera!
'evening out' as in 'smoothing'/ 'not subject to the influence of individual results', not as in 'a period of external entertainment after the hours of darkness'!

Thanks Johnalex, I've never come across that word before. I learn a lot of new words from Saga - maybe this one will stick, with the Gemini connection to remind me.
