can anybody help me regarding laptops, I recently purchased a new laptop without a serial / com port, I then purchased a USB 1.1 serial adapter for the laptop, installed the adapter but still not working, the error message is saying cannot find com port

I am trying to download info from a refrigerated shipping container to my computer , but the lead given needs a com port hence the reason for the adapter. any help much appreciated

thks again, the cable for the shipping unit and laptop is a cable similiar to a monitor cable with pins, but unfortunately the laptop doesn't have a port to fit this, so I got a USB adapte, connected the cable with the pins to the adapter then into the USB port on my laptop, installed the disk OK as it said successful and finish, but when a try to connect, its saying connection not established and missing incorrect com port
