Why have a dog and then shut it away. Have her with you and she will be fine.

we leave her shut in the kitchen at night when we go to bed but the constant wining is wakeing up my nan which we have to then put her in our bedroom which then she is quiet but i dont like the idea of this
I.d be whiney and annoying if i were shut away! Why get a dog in the first place if she cant be part of your life! Get a goldfish, it,ll be a lot less bother for you!

Do you sleep with your dog then?
sorry thought it was a Drisgirl thread
Why do you leave her shut in the kitchen at night?

A dog is part of the family, she is probably whining because she wants to be in her normal surroundings

I`m sure your nan would whine if you left her in the kitchen at night
I had a staff puppy who was constintly whinning when she couldnt see us so when ever she started crying we ignored her n when she didnt whine we gave her a treat and gave her some fuss

I really hope this helps

I aggree with these answers, why have a dog if it can't be with you, and what's wrong with having a dog in the bedroom. No wonder the poor dog is unhappy.
All my dogs sleep in the bedroom. They have the run of the house and if they want they can go downstairs at any time, but they sleep either on my bed or on doggy duvets around the room.

Someone I met a couple of days ago has just got a new Dandie Dinmont puppy. I asked if he was being good and she said he started to cry the first night when left downstairs so she took him to bed and he has settled straight away every night and slept right through to about six am, when she gets up and lets him out, then they go back to bed. Problem solved!
I agree with everyone! My wee pup will happily sleep in my bedroom - in fact he gets fairly excited about going up there at night time!! He has beds, blankets etc and basically he just craves company - he's part of the family. He sends up the zzz's all night (occasionally nicking my duvet!!) but mostly will happily settle down until wake up time!! He is no problem!!!xxx
We got our dog from the local rescue centre, the first night we left him downstairs and he cried for about 20 minutes, that was it (im such a wuss), he came upstairs and has slept on my bed ever since. He sleeps right through the night with his head up on the pillow facing me, snoring like an old man, and I even have to nudge him awake in the mornings......and no I dont smell of dog before anyone asks!!

Just let her in....job done!
Completely agree with people above!

My Cleo stopped whining as soon as we let her sleep upstairs! She starts off on her bed which is on the floor next to my side of the bed, and then when she feels like it jumps on to the bed and sleeps at the foot of the bd by my feet!
Although I partly agree with what is being said,my dogs also have the run of the house, not everyone wants their dog in their bedroom, I don't know how old your dog is, does she do it constantly or does she stop after a while?
These answers dont seem to be very helpfull.
Not everyone wants animals upstairs. I for one would not have a little pup in the bed in case it was accidently squashed or fell off in the night!
My pup has slept in the hall since his first night and settles fine.
it is also not practical to have the dog with you all the time in the day. Dogs should be happy with their own company for a while.
Niki have you tried diverting him with a treat ball or a kong? my pup loves a cardboard box - messy but fun!
Sorry if i havnt been much help but I do sympathise!
What are the reasons for not having a dog in the bedroom? I really can't see the problem with it!
There is nothing wrong with having a dog in your bedroom if that is your personal preference, but not everyone wants the same thing.
Back to the original question though, have you tried leaving a radio on softly, you haven't said how old the dog is, Sammc is right when she says that dogs should be happy on their own occasionally, I don't quite understand though why you keep her away from you during the day? I aways have puppies following me during the day so that I know when they need to go out in the garden, also it's good for them to explore their surroundings, a dog/puppy needs to be with it's 'pack' for part of the day to keep it healthy mentally, to deny this is actually quite cruel, which I'm sure you are not trying to be, but I don't understand why you keep it separate from you during the day?

my dog is 3 yrs old....we do keep her with us in the day....we have just moved house but in r old house she was with us all day then put in the kitchen at night and without a doubt she used to mess in the kitchen and was like this everyday.....now that with have moved into my nans flat we did the same thing keep her with us all day then kitchen on a night but this time leave the kitchen door open and there a safty gate up at the door but all she kept doing was whining....so we put her in our bedroom and made sure she went for a walk 3 times a day one wen she woke up one at tea time and one befor she went to sleep inour room now she doing mess outside...the only prob now is wen we have to leave the dog with my nan wen we stay out at night every now and then she will have to stay in the kitchen as if we leave her in nans room she will fall over her in the night...im just not wanting to leave her with nan and for her to keep waking her in the night wining
Try getting a puppy crate for her, and let her sleep in that either in your room or in your nan's room if you are not there. At least she will have the company, but will not be able to wander round and trip poor old nan up.
sleeping with a dog is disgusting. let it sleep on the floor where it belongs. ours sleeps in the corner on a bed of its own and when it snores I usually throw a sock or slipper at it which usually stops it for long enough for me to get back to sleep.

Hope this hellps
I have a dog and have had her for 8 years. For the first 2 years of her life she was shut in the kitchen at night but I split from my partner so ever since then she has slept at the foot of the bed with me. Not everyone's choice, I know and I don't think it is bad keeping the dog in the kitchen at night but not through the day as well. You say you keep a gate up so it keeps the dog in the kitchen during the day. Your dog is probably lonely and bored. Why keep the dog separate from the family during the day. Im sure she would stop winning if you paid her some attention during the day.
