I have several butternut squash plants in a large pot with a rigid plasic shield around it, therefor the plants are upright, do they have to lay across the ground. they have large yellow flowers at the moment, do I have to do anything except water a lot and feed. also how do i get rid of caterpillers from my brussles

The butternut squashes I grew last year (from the seeds of one I`d bought & cooked) had the same habit as a marrow, i.e they sprawl & take up quite a lot of space. As for brassicas, the only ones I can grow without being shredded by caterpillers are the broccoli varieties, because I don`t like using pesticides. If you don`t mind a chemical solution visit a garden centre & read the labels.
