A new series of Law and Order SVU starts on Channel 5 this week, can anyone tell me what series number this will be, also what happens to Olivia sometime in the future,I know she will be out of the story for a long while.

I know that it is series 6 that starts this week. I dont know what happens to Olivia.

Thanks Bagpuss, I think the makers are now on to series 10. Somewhere along the line Olivia is laid off for a long time and gets replaced. I saw an episode in America where she called in at the station, saw Elliot's new partner and left without speaking to anyone.

I think I rememberreading somewhere that she left to have a baby in the later series she only seemed to be in head shots so you could not see her bump!

I think I remember seeing one where she said she was being a surrogant for her sister, and that was how they explained her pregnancy in the show. It was quite a while ago that I saw that tho but it seems to stick out in my mind. unless I dreamt it! lol

It was Eames in Criminal Intent who was a surrogate to her sister. Mariska Hargitay(Olivia) had a baby in June 2006. Series 8 was shown in October 2006 so was presumably filming while she was pregnant. She appears in episode one and is then seconded for undercover work for the FBI, returning less than halfway through the series.

Thanks for your reply, yours seems to be the right answer.
A year or so ago I saw part of an episode in America where Olivia walked into the Police Station and somebody expressed surprise to see her. She looked for Elliot and when she saw him with a new partner she quietly walked out again.
I think channel 5 is a long way behind American TV.

They've been showing them all on Hallmark Channel on Virgin, season 9 starts there in the autumn - in fact, I'm watching it just now and its Olivia's first ep back after having her baby :)
