Can chlorine damage silver?

Sorry if this is in the wrong category, I couldn't figure out where to put it.

I went swimming the other day and when I got back I noticed my silver rings and necklace looked very discoulered. I bought some silver cleaning cream and it hasn't worked!

These rings are very precious to me as they belonged to my Nans, which is why I never take them off. I have never experienced this problem before and I am quite a regular swimmer. Does anyone know if it is possible to get them looking shiny again? Or is the damage permanent?

Chlorine does tarnish silver:

The high chlorine and/or Bromine contents used in swimming pools and hot tubs will accelerate the tarnishing of Sterling Silver
