I think adding sound to a site is the quickest way to get people to leave the site, even if you can mute the sound.

People do surf at work (even if they should not) and the last thing they want is sound starting up when they go on a site.
I agree whole heartedly

unless you have a very very good reason/need to have sound on your web site don't do it.

this site is meant to be for answers.. both of those are not answers.

i understand what you are sayin but this is to have randomly played nature sounds for a media site that matches the backgorund. not the annoying music i think everyone thinks we are on about

so any answers to the initial question still welcomed....

thanks

This isn't an answer either.

But I agree with the above.

The first sign of background music screams to me "amateur", and I invariably close the page.

Imagine this.

I'm listening to my own music, browsing the web. I open your page. My music is rudely interrupted by your awful music that I didn't ask for. I'm just going to close the page.
Yep, gotta agree with the others - instead of having it automatically play the sounds and an option to mute, why not have a "click to play" instead? Much more friendly...
