buying a parrot

Im 26 and just been diagnosed with HIV. I may live ten years or the rest of my natural life. Would it be selfish of me to buy a parrot? I will only be working part time. Before everyone starts this is NOT a wind up.

I'm so sorry to hear about your illness.

I don't think it would be a good idea. Parrot's can live up to 30 years or more. Bit responsibility.

If you are sure you could pass your parrot on to a good home in the event that it is going to outlive you, then there is no reason why you should not enjoy the companionship during your time left.

That is the basis on which you should go ahead - or not.

Thanks Andy but the whole 'time left' thing isnt very optomistic. Its no longer considered a killer unless your unlucky. I will look into god parents though.

Could you not contact a 'parrot rescue' organisation and take on an older one? (If such a thing exists).

A lot of parrots have many owners is its lifetime, and adapt very well to their new home.

Have a parrot if you want one.

Do what you want stop worrying what others may think and go for it, my male friend was diagnosed HIV over 10 years ago but he still has pets that are going to outlast him but it doesnt worry him he just gives them the love and care that they deserve plus they give him so much pleasure that they help when he is feeling low I say go for it and that parrots make wonderful companions!

Not a bird fancier myself.... (frankly think they want to take over the planet and peck our eyes out - especially chickens!) but you could try an adult bird - maybe a rescue one... that is already quite old then as you work part time you can let it out of its cage (it can sh1t all over your floor) and you can give it as much attention as you can.
Good luck with your treatment - I sincerely hope you have many happy years ahead of you! Keeping positive is important (state of mind and all that!)

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis at such a young age.

At the end of the day, none of us know if we will live ten months, ten years, or to a ripe old age.....Although I do think you have to make arrangements for your pets for when you are not around.

At least you know when you may decease and have time to prepare.....don't worry about life span (maybe a bus will get u or me 2moro). Have ur parrot and enjoy it's company and teach it some 'choice' words or tunes.

Animals and pets soon settle with who-ever feeds them....they r not emotional like humans......

My best mate was diagnosed with HIV almost 15 years ago and he's still working full time and going strong!

With the correct treatment and lifestyle changes, this isn't considered taboo or a life sentence anymore! Get a parrot, it's not selfish at all!
