raised vegetable beds

is it a good idea to line the bed with thick black polythene to prevent weeds from appearing? if so should we put some holes in for drainage? Many thanks.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.if you want to line it there is some stuff called....nope can't remember it is water permeable membrane (looks like black really tough j cloth, lets water through without letting things grow through it, you can use it as a barrier against weeds...although they will seed into the soil and unless you are using sterilised topsoil, any bits of weed root or seed will shoot again. More usually it is used inder gravel paths and laid on top of soil under mulch, you cut a hole where you want a plant and plant through it
