Could Harpo Marx really not speak or did he just play it this way in The Marx Bros Movies?

He could speak, gerry - just part of the act.

I as understand it the only words he spoke on stage  was to announce his retirement.

I believe that he once did an interview on a TV chat show, although the only tape recording of it was wiped clear before it came to be realised that it was important historically.
