how far can a minor (under 16 ) travel to school unacompanied

There's no legal limit.

In the south-east of England, where large numbers of children attend independent schools, loads of children travel (unaccompanied) to school by train. Most of them only travel 10 to 20 miles but some travel 50 miles or more.
