Nervous Biker
5 Answers
I've just done my CBT and I'm signed up for my Direct Access.... I know I've only spent 2 hours on the road, but I couldn't believe how vulnerable/nervous I felt.... does it get better?
I've always wanted to do my bike license, and I'm got my advanced driving qualification, but I couldn't beleive how different it is on a bike!

"Sorry mate i didn't see" you is their usual excuse when they come out of a side road and knock you of your bike
It does get better though, you just have to drive defensively when your on the road.
Once you get the experience you will enjoy it more than being in a slow tin box.

Feeling vulnerable is not uncommon. I'd wanted to do a bike test for years and when I finally did I felt exactly the same after my CBT. I was basically starting from scratch, been driving for 15 years or so but when that first bus roared past me I did feel VERY uneasy. Guarantee that once you get some more miles under your belt your confidence will increase as will your perception of hazards. One thing it did do for me was to make me a better driver. That said I found myself doing "lifesaver" looks even when I was back in the car, which got me some starnge looks from the wife! Also I found that when later in the DAS when moved from the 125 to the 500cc bike (ER5) actually felt a lot safer. Maybe only psychological but more likely because by that stage had spent another couple of days on the road.
Good luck with the training,oh and good idea to get it in before the test rules change (in October I think)
It can be tricky but stick with it - an incredible feeling when you finally pass.
Enjoy!
