How the hell did Gareth Southgate's penalty miss make it to number 39?? .......hold on, I cried then too....as I was LAUGHING SO MUCH!!!!!!
Any films involving thwarted love, terminal illness or cutesy kids I can be cynical and hard as nails about (notable exception, that scene in Sophie's Choice where she has to decide which of her children to save), but anything involving animals...the end of The Incredible Journey, where the pets finally find their family again, I...oh God *sniff*, I'm off again... :,-(
As I've said elsewhere, it was a bit of a fix - the first most people hear of these shows is when they are broadcast, so who votes?
It was a fairly predictable list, and missed many of my favourite tear-jearking moments (admittedly some are fairly idiosyncratic/obscure) but I guess "Nip/Tuck" has yet to hit it big, as the suicide from Season 1 - the saddest thing I've ever seen on TV wasn't featured. (I burst into tears just trying to explain to Mme LeMarchand, who doesn't watch the show, what happened - just thinking about it starts the old eyes prickling even now).
ET is one of the greatest cinematic events of all time - a masterpiece of imagery and what is probably John William's greatest film score ever. The tearjerker moment is so powerful because it is an emotionally confusing climax - ET gets to go home (ahhh) but also, ET has to go home (sniff boo-hoo). The acting was so real - because of the traumatising method of directing followed by Spielberg, that everyone can feel the pain and joy of the characters.
Phew, that was a bit of a rant.
