Home insurance with joint policy holder

If I have home insurance cover with a joint policy holder and the joint policy holder is not related to me, is that still valid despite the a policy assumption that only the policy holder and family members must live at the property.

The thing with all insurance policies is that if they see an escape from paying you out for a claim, for example that you DIDN'T disclose something, they will use it.
I found this out when my then current insurer when renewing said there'd be a problem because I had a lodger. Basically, had I tried to make a claim during the previous year, they would not have paid out because they didn't know about them.
