Computer Game balistics

Been playing a lot of Counter strike source recently and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on how the balistics element of the game is handled.

Does the game create a 'virtual bullet' who's path it calculates everytime you fire the gun?

Nope its uses hitscan.
