The Great Wall has an extensive history, beginning perhaps as early as 800BC and extending until as late as 1600's AD.  It was built to be occupied with guard towers and ramparts for defense.  Check here:

Yes, on holiday a couple of years ago I walked a short length at the Beijing end. It is very steep in places with many steps. I did not go far as I am no longer nimble !
