Are advertising hoardings in farmers' fields legal?

Have noticed a new trend for advertising hoardings to be placed in fields next to the motorway. Is this legal? Can someone  please point me to some information which can verify whether it is legal or not.

There was a program on the BBC news a while back and basicly it is not legal but there is a loop hole that is being exploited, advertisments on billboards along the motorways are illegal as it may distract drivers but you will notice all ads are in farmers fields, so not "government" property and they are not placed on proper billboards but on sides of lorries and hay barrels, so there is nothing that can be done about it, but councils are looking into it and hope to change the law.  Maybe try looking at the bbc website it might have more info.

Are those hordings mounted on trailers that the political parties tow around the streets at election time legal?

Well, the farmers-field hoardings are usually attached to trailers, wagons etc. Ok, they may not be road-worthy, but they don't have to be - they're on private land.

The point is, they are mobile structures, and therefore exempt from the usual planning consents and restrictions that govern the siting of advertising hoardings.
