Think the antipenultimate letter is D.......if...

is Bedford? But can't work out the wordplay.

A) (i think is 1d) Small boy or girl failed exam at beggining of term A _ _ C _ T

Pretty sure it's avocet but again can't work out word play.

County town with duke leads to Bedford (as you deduced) but then you have to replace the D (dead) with L (left)
