Divorce settlement
Having been separated for 4 yrs my parents are getting a divorce. Their finances were settled to the satisfaction of them both at the time of the split. Their previously amicable divorce has now become acrimonious due to dad's solicitor insisting that a separate form now be completed detailing all his finances, and that mum also needs to complete the same form with her details (at a further cost of around 350), in case either makes a claim against the other in future. Surely this is not necessary when they agreed a settlement and purchased their own separate houses etc 4 years ago? Any advice would be very gratefully received!!!

There may be issues either parent had not thought of (eg pension rights). This does not mean it has to be included in the settlement if the parties agree not to. At the end of the day it is up to your parents to tell the solicitor what they want but if anything goes wrong the solicitors could be sued for bad advice.
I done all the paperwork myself for my divorce, you just phone the court and they will send you all the details, well worth it if both parties have settled all the property and financial bits. I think it cost me about 60 in total for court costs, and it goes through quicker as you don't have to wait for solicitors to pull their finger out of their a$$es.
I'm currently going through this process myself, and am very amicable with my husband. We each bought our own properties and since we earn similar salaries and wish things to remain good, we have no interest in the others finances. We are proceeding with our divorce online with quickie-divorce at a cost of 69 - we fill our forms in with no mention of the others finances and then just pay 340 total court costs - shared between us! Solicitors seem to charge rather a lot for the same service that you can get online cheaper, and it seems since your dad's solicitor really doesn't care about your parents feelings, he is just out to get what he can financially! If your parents can overcome any animosity this has caused I would suggest they sit down and have a chat and make a final decision on what they want from the other. Then just tell the solicitor the facts - if he gets stroppy, your folks can always sign something to say they have relieved him of this part of the procedure.
You can download the Form E disclosure document from the court service website and complete it themselves as Solicitors will a) charge you by the hour and b) take their time to complete it.
