The 'flat glass' used for windows is known as 'float glass'.
Put simply, the molten glass is poured onto a layer of molten metal in a continuous running process. Being less dense, the liquid glass floats on top of the liquid metal (think of a thin layer of oil on water) When cooled, this produces an even, flat glass suitable for window panes.
Without actually looking it up, I forget which molten metal (or more likely alloy) that they use, or who invented the process, though I suspect it's a well known name like Pilkington or something.
