I'm thinking about buying a mark 2 MR2 turbo and there are lots out there, both standard and modified. I've been told that the standard turbo isn't too reliable. Does anyone have and experience of this? Cheers.

I've not owned one but toyotas are very reliable usually anyway,
if you dont thrash it when its cold and you give it time to idle for 10 seconds or so before turning off, as well as an oil and filter change every 3k (good oil!) then you should have no worries as far as i can see.
