virus & external hard drive

does anyone know the answer to this question

I'm going to be buy an mac soon and was thinking of getting an external hard drive to transfer files (pictures & music) over from my pc and for storage later on, but I was just wondering if my pc has a virus would that get transfered onto the hard drive then on to the mac.
I know that mac's and pc's are different with virus's but i didn't want to damage the mac in anyway!

Also I have been looking at ex HD and I was looking at a WD but some of the reviews on amazon aint to clever, so now i'm leaning towards a maxtor, is this a reliable one?

A PC virus can not be transfered to a MAC at all so you'll be safe there, though you really should be ensureing your PC doesn't get a virus by having effective AV software installed on it.

I'd say both WD and maxtor are realiable hard drive brands

I do have AVG installed on my PC, is that good enough virus protection as I have had problems with Norton before!

I'd disagree with Chuck there personally; some viruses can be copied across.

It's just very unlikely.

Just copy your stuff across as planned; it'll work out well.

WD and Maxtor good brands. Seagate, Hitachi, IBM and LaCie also make (and use) good drives.

AVG is well recommended , certainly better than Norton

I work in a large computer section and to be honest we have had nothing but trouble with Maxtor internal hard drives. Not sure about the externals but I personally wouldn't touch them.

I'm now leaning towards WD Elements 500GB, but the more I look into it the more I get confused as every website has different reviews, it seems that every hard drive is not without it's problems, I think I just need to make a decision and keep my fingers crossed that it does the job.

We use a lot of LACIE externals. No problem at all with them.

LaCie actually use other manufacturers' drives, and just package them in their own cases.

All drives have issues. Don't store really valuable stuff on just one drive.

I've got a WD, LaCie and Maxtor and haven't had issues with any of them (touch wood).
