Why would wave sound like a stage. And why would wave fit "throw"?

Is this not whats said when singer throws himself from the stage into the audience , is that not called a wave?

Well, perhaps, but the point of the word "audience" in the clue is that the word must "sound like" another word meaning "stage". So stage = phase, which sounds like faze (whose definition is "throw"). To be fazed, to be thrown.

Crossword compilers use various techniques to denote "look for a word that sounds like another". The use of the word "audience" is one of those techniques.
