dog bite

my 6 month old lab has been bit tonight by a staffordshire terrier,blood everywhere,my kids had to witness there dog like that,in a childs play area,i had my dog on lead the staff was in the play area in the care of 2 9 year old kids.It climbed under the fenced area to greet my dog with that. What are kids of 9 doing with a dog like that?i had to kick the thing off. I havent got anything against staffies but my god.scary. vets for me in the morning.

Nothing against SBT's as my old next door neighbour had one that was great with kids and people, but the majority of them are not good with other dogs, and once they get a hold, their jaws clamp shut. We have a lot of them around here, and one up the road has already attacked two dogs and also one of the owners, the police were involved, but I believe the dog is still around. I now take a large walking stick just in case. Sorry about your dog, and I hope he gets better soon.

Hi there sorry to hear about your poor dog, my ex had two staffies and they were lovely dogs to have in the house with the kids but as soon as the bitch got near another dog she went mental and had she had half a chance she would go for another dog. Unfortunatly its a breed thing with staffies if they have not been brought up to get on with other dogs they can be nasty. But I always insisted he kept her on a lead and mussled to protect other dogs. The boy on the other hand was fine with other dogs as I trained him from a puppy and intergrated him with other dogs from an early age.
On the other hand there is no way in hell I would EVER of let either dog out with the kids by themselves dogs can be unpredictable due to environmental stressors and it is highly irrisponsible of the dog owner to let the kids out with the dog staffies have lock jaws so once they have a hold its hard to get them off and it is a horrible thing to have to see for a grown up let alone your kids.
I dont have any dogs now my ex has gone and I miss them a bit but they were hard work I just hope you dog is ok x x

I think in future i will carry a large stick whilst out walking. I havent got anything against staffies but they need to be in the right hands,its a worry. im sure my dex will be fine,just needs a good clean up from the vet. Could of been a lot worse. not nice though.

Totally agree with pinkbunny. We have Staffs as well, and although they're fabulous with people, they aren't so good natured with other dogs, because of their breeding, but ALL terriers were originally bred to hunt. The bitches seem to be the worst in my opinion, and were the preferred sex for use during bear fights. We had ours properly trained, and feel very at ease with them around our children and their friends, but if out where there's a liklihood of them coming into contact with other dogs, we have them muzzled and on a lead. Sorry to hear about your dog getting hurt though, and no dog should be allowed in a play area.

Hi there. So sorry to hear about your lab - just hope he isn't too traumatised. A friend of mine has a golden lab and he was also attacked by a staff. It ran out of it's driveway, and jaws locked onto the lab's head. My friend was in a right state as the dog would not let go. The owners came out and apologised and paid for the vets bill, but what is so worrying is that it's still around and the owners allow it off lead all the time in our local park where kids and other dogs are about. The owners need to be more responsible.
