Timbuktu, I don't think exists anymore......r u being sent for tartan digestives?
Of course it still exists! See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timbuktu

There are quite a few people whi have driven from the UK to Timbuktu in various vehicles. This particular trip in Toyota Landruisers took from Dec 28th to Jan 11th, so about 14 days. I don't know whether they stopped off on the way, I couldn't be bothered to read it all!

Ive read most of the info on line most people stop every few day's .I was just enquireing if any one had done the trip straight through ,and how long ,it's approx 4500 miles we were hopeing to drive it in just over a week then return to gambia to chill for a few day's ,we are travelling as part of the plymouth dakar challenge which is for 3-4 wk's long ,but my co-driver can only get 2 wk's leave now, soit's a rush job.
that's 500-600 miles a day, much of it across desert. You'd better be good at fixing broken down vehicles. I don't think getting to Gambia from there is going to be a picnic either; it's more jungly out towards the coast. So you'll basically be doing the whole challenge trip to Dakar (which is close to the Gambian coastline) but in a third of the time? Good luck.
