If it is the 8 valve engine then would expect to find that the head gasket has blown, allowing water to seep into either no1 or no4 cylinder, check in the morning for lots of steam and water from the exhaust rev the engine and you should see it easily, also check the water leval when cool, as you might find this is low
If it is the head gasket expect a garage to charge about 3.5 hours labour plus parts, the cylinder head should not need skjmming
if the water leval is ok and there is no steam from cold then i would suspect spark plugs or leads
