I've found most folk prefer to have children close together in age. I however went the total opposite. There is a 16 year age gap between my two and that for me worked very well. I was able to devote 100% of me to my first one, and then when she was more or less independant of me, I had my youngest and again, I'm able to devote 100% of me to her.

i have a five year old and am due with second soon, i think it will be a lovely age gap. it was so nice to have just the one child for that time but i guess with third or more its different so i am thinking i would like to have the third quite close, maybe a year and a half but will have to see! i think it would be so nice to have grown up children and then have more.
My first 2 are 18 months apart to the day - 9th April & 9th Oct and my youngest is 19 months younger as I didn't want them to share a birthday - I was very "organised"!
They are now 17, 16 and 14 and have always got on really well.
When they were little they were just too young to realise that we were bringing another baby into the nest!
I always felt that 1 takes up all your time and energy, 3 couldn't take up any more!
