VW Golf 1995 Bonnet Catch

It seems the bonnet release cable has become detached from the release catch on my Golf (1995).  The release lever is loose but the cable is still attached to it.  I have removed the lever and tried pulling the cable incase it had just stretched with no joy.  The catch appears to to be sheilded by the slam panel looking at a Haynes manual.  The lower half of the radiator grill can be unclipped but the top can't as you need to open the bonnet to gain access to the clips.  But it doesn't look as if even with the grill removed it would be possible to get acces to the mechanism.  I have tried reaching up from the underside of the car with no avail.  Does anyone know if this can be done easily or is it a case of firing up my the angle grinder.  Many Thanks.
