how do I get the cheapest calls to UK from my mobile in EU

I have an O2 mobile phone on contract and I will be going to France for 2 months soon. What is the cheapest way for me to call my friends and family in the UK while I am away?
Someone told me that if I receive a call from a UK mobile the caller will not be charged as if it was an international call (as they might not know I was out of the country) so might that be the best solution (I don't pay for calls in whilst in Europe)?
I will not really have access to a landline as I will be in a fairly rural area.
I do have a Skype account here in the UK .

Yes. You can call landlines anywhere in the world with Skype, very cheaply.

That's assuming you'll have broadband in France, of course.

I have registered my mobile phone with Skype, so I can send texts via Skype (keyboard is so much easier) for 5p. Of course, replies go to my mobile.
