System Restore

I have Windows XP and plenty of disc space, but System Restore hasn't worked for ages. I've tried many restore points but the job never completes properly. There are many references on the internet to programmes one might use to repair System Restore, but without knowing anything about them I'm wary of jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. Does anyone know a safe and reliable repair please?

Thank you neildownx. I have tried but unfortunately without success. When I typed in the command and clicked OK a black window flashed briefly on the screen then disappeared, but that's all that happened. I also turned off System Restore (not for the first time!), turned it back on again and have created just one new restore point, but will need to wait a day or two to see if it works. No problem about losing all previous restore points as none of them worked anyway. I'll keep hoping but thank you for trying.

you can't click ok

cmd should bring up a command (black) window - something like this

so C:\Documents and Settings\AndyW>chkdsk /r /f
and then press the enter key (no mouse)

why the restores though .... why do you need it?

I should have clicked after entering cmd, but instead put in the whole code! The black window opens now but indicates NTFS chkdsk cannot run .... 'volume is in use by another process'. AC you ask why I needed restore. I'd been experimenting with (Firefox) add-ons and plug-ins and had several freezes. When I clicked to empty the recycle bin it asked "Do you really want to delete Windows?" I opened the bin to explore but there was nothing there, so clicked OK and it seems alright now. I felt that Restore wouldn't be a bad idea.
