Christening / Godparents

Does anybody know if there is a limit on the number of godparents and of which sex they should be for a baby boy who is being christened?

Also, can an older sibling be a godparent?

I'm fairly sure there is no proscribed limit, but i think anything more than 3 Godmothers and 3 Godfathers starts to look a bit OTT. I think the gender of GP's is at the parents' discretion, and yes, you can select older siblings if you wish. Most churches will allow you to nominate a 'stand-in' if one of your chosen GP's is unable to attend in person for any reason.

Sorry, by 'stand in', I meant someone who can represent the absent Godparent, who is still the actual Godparent, even though they are not there at the Christening, but their presence is represented by another individual.

Traditionally a boy would have two god-fathers and one god mother and a girl the opposite.  Mind you, bearly anyone sticks to this - i was christened nearly 30 years ago and i've got two of each.

Never heard that an older sibling can't be - I'm not religious but my feeling towards god parents is that they are there to be close to that child and potentially to look after that child if (touch wood) anything should happen to it's parents.  They're also there to spoil you rotten.  I adore my god-daughter and it's a special bond.

I agree with Englishbird - 2 Godfathers, 1 God mother for a boy, two God mothers, 1 Godfather for a girl

Given that there's no such thing as God and that Christianity is a sham, bothering with a christening and godparents is all very pointless.

We had 4 god mothers and 1 Godfathers for our son, we wanted 1 more Godfather but it turned out he hadn't been baptised himself and was apparently ineligable.

Jooleebobs - you seem to have some difficulty understanding my very simple point - which was that a christening is pointless, given that Christianity is a sham (along with all other religions).
What I did not say, or even mean to imply, was that your question was a waste of time.
I'm also surprised that a follower of a faith that preaches forgiveness (though, bafflingly, not tolerance) should single me, a stranger to you, out for criticism on a web board. No, in fact, I'm not surprised, because, after all, isn't that a choice example of the hypocrisy of Christianity?

pp3000 i believe you were 'singled out' because your answer was pointless. I am not a christian but i believe in god-parents the same way I believe in 'christ'mas. The question wasn't about christianity it was about godparents, don't know why your knickers are in such a twist about it.

Englishbird - you believe in introducing children to the Christian faith but don't follow it yourself?  I find that odd at best, and at worst sinister.

Christmas has little to do with Christianity, which usurped the Pagan festival not that long ago.

Again, the point is PP3000 that your answer did not answer the original question. The submitter was not asking for a religous debate. If you want a debate on this there are many websites with forums to cater for you. Relax ;)
