You don't even need to visit the local register office. If you know the details Ethel provided (indeed, I think you only need full name, date of death and rough place), you can write to the Superintendant Registrar in the area where death occurred and they will provide a copy for the aforementioned fee.
Alternatively you get more info here

Hi CB2
Thanks for expressing your confidence in me.
Ethel has (as always) provided an excellent answer. The register office for the area in which the death occurred would be the best place to ask. However, your local register office (if different) should also be able to help.
Or, as Ethel has indicated, you can order online.
This page tells you about ordering certificates online. (It's primarily aimed at people researching their family trees but it's just as valid for people like you). There's also a search box (on the right of the page) which lets you search for the contact details of your local register office:

Hi Monty! Hope you get what you want hun - and hope you don't mind if I use your thread to ask Chris, Ethel or anyone else who seriously might know, if they can help my sister's friend out.
She got married in 1970, and left her husband within a few months. Her Decree Absolute came through in 1975 time, but she's lost all reference to the marriage and divorce papers, and can't even remember the exact date of getting married, although she knows the register office where they went to. Now she needs these papers, and doesn't know where to begin to obtain copies. What should she do?
