Use same Modem for PC & Laptop simultaneously

Hi Guys, Need your help again. Why I create myself these questions at my age I don't know. I have bought my Grand-daughter a laptop but her Mum has only a Modem which she uses for her own PC. Now I know that there is a method of connecting the outlet of the Modem to a Router instead of the PC and then run 2 x RJ45's from Router (one to PC and one to Laptop)
Am I correct in thinking this ? cos it seems tooo easy.
I have a spare 3Com router so my question to you is this. Can I connect the way I have mentioned above or is there other alterations I must make to the proposed set-up. Thank you for your time & all previous help.

Is the modem for ADSL broadband (BT, Tiscali, etc.) for cable broadband (NTL, Tiscali, Virgin Media)?

ADSL modems often only give USB output (for some stupid reason I don't understand); routers accept ethernet input, not USB.

So if it's an ADSL modem, you'll be best buying a ADSL modem+router in one box.

Then connect the modem+router unit to the PC. Connect laptop wirelessly.

If the modem outputs via ethernet (RJ45), then you can safely buy just a router unit, with no modem (and this, if your 3Com unit is like this, should suffice).

But it'll be easiest for your granddaughter (and anyone else who comes to visit with a laptop) if the unit is wireless.
