Hamster Experts

My hamster doesn't wake up until about midnight so I hardly ever see him so it's a bit pointless having one. This can't be right, I know they're nocturnal but is there something I'm doing wrong? When I do stay up late enough he's perfectly friendly, I can pick him up and stroke him and he likes going in his ball but during the working week I never see him at all.
