Sony calls Fire Wire IEEE 94 just for the fun of it. Most of their laptops will only have the 4 pin connector as opposed to the full size so don't provide any power, at least that's in my experience.
Forget sony .... the rest of the world calls it ieee1394

there are loads of adapters out there - possibly cheaper to get the lappy of your dreams (which will probably have pcmcia and certainly USB2)
plus and adapter

Firewire
iLink (sony)
IEEE 1394 (official standard)
IEEE1394a (firewire 400)
IEEE1394b (firewire 800)
FW
FW400
FW800

Most come with 400, not 800. 800 is twice as fast though, so may be useful. MacBook Pros come with FW800.

But if you already have a laptop with cardbus or expresscard slot on the side, you can get a card to give you firewire ports, for a lot less than a new laptop.
