automatic car problem

whilst driving my automatic ford escort 1997 model when foot is down on accelerator the engine makes a high revving noise and starts to run sluggish i drop the gear down to lower gear it stops then i put it back into drive for a little while then i have to repeat this

check the gear box fluid level is ok,if it is ok then it is probably something to do with the bands or the torque converter.
