I am going to New York for a few days. If I buy CD ROMs and DVDs over there, will they work in my PC when I come back to England, or do they use an incompatible system, as is the case for videotapes.

CD-Roms yes, I have bought computer study guides direct from the USA which have included CDs, and they have worked perfectly well. DVDs are another matter, DVD films have regions, USA is region 1, Europe is region 2 etc. Visit www.ddigest.com for full details and instructions on how to get around this.
