Guttering

I need new gutters and downpipes on my house so I phoned a company for a quote. He said that there is a standard price for a 3 bed house of �1600. Do they normally quote depending on the number of bedrooms? I just don't understand why. (I am in London by the way)

Hi crapmemory, I live in Devon and I have never heard of quoting for guttering without even looking at the job. Can't see how they could do it with the difference in house sizes and shapes. I think like The Builder that they couldn't be bothered to come and look. If you did accept the quote and they come to do it, I bet if you got smallish house they would charge what they quote but if you got big house you will find that they give you another price after seeing it. If I was you I would try a couple of other builders first and get some prices off them.

Shedman, that's exactly what I thought! Will certainly get some more quotes.

I think the answer is more fundamental - the margin on that price is so large that it doesn't really matter how big the 3-bed house is, a shed-load of profit will be the result anyway.
Materials for the job sounds like about �300 max. Maybe 3-man day's work.
