The Federative Republic of Brazil or Rep�blica Federativa do Brasil. It is named after Brazil-wood, a local (although originally East Indian) tree used for making a red dye. As for recent history, the BBC Country Profile section is a good place to start.

You can say what you want about the CIA, but their World Factbook is a good place to start looking for information on any country. Having said that, I think I'd feel more comfortable getting my information from the BBC Country Profiles - Thanks for the link, IndieSinger.
