Removal of self planted trees

I have 2 self planted sycamore trees on one boundary of my property. My neighbours want them cut down as they are very tall - I have no issue with this but have explained that I cannot afford to pay for it. I own my property but it does have a mortgage and I am in receipt of Pension Credit. My neighbours have become very unpleasant. If it were to go to Court can I be ordered to cut them down, despite my lack of funds? Might I also have to pay their Legal costs? I have offered to pay a part share with all owners next door, but this has been rejected. The boundary wall is bowed, but it always has been for the last 20 years and a tree surgeon has said the trees are not making it worse.

If the trees are on your property your neighbours cannot make you get them cut down. There may be an exception to this if they could prove that they are causing damage to their property but from what you say about the tree surgeon that does not seem to be the case.

The neighbours can cut off any overhanging branches if they wish, but at their cost not yours.

I don't see on what basis they could take you to Court.

Get a tree surgeon that would put it in writing! Ask them to be present while you talk to this person.
I agree that they cannot force you to have them cut down if tey cannot prove that the trees are dameging their property. Their unpleasantness., thats a difficult one to live with?
