My stand-alone speakers that are connected to my computer have recently started to make a crackling noise.

Could anyone please tell me what is the cause for this?

If they have a volume control on them it's probably that causing it.

Try winding the volume up and down from min to max several times to see if that cleans and cures it (you can also try putting a little wd40 into the volume control to help with the cleaning)
