I reckon its either lack of parental control.. or too many additives in our diet!!!! Something is making the kids go screwy!!! Wonder if its mostly chav families that have kids with ADHD... or do posh families have them too???

Ritalin has been used since the 1960s:

By 1966 the `experts' had come up with a definition of the sort of child for whom Ritalin could useful be prescribed. Children suffering from Minimal Brain Dysfunction (MBD), the first syndrome for which Ritalin was recommended, were defined as `children of near average, average or above average general intelligence with certain learning or behavioural disabilities ranging from mild to severe, which are associated with deviations of function of the central nervous system. These deviations may manifest themselves by various combinations of impairment in perception, conceptualization, language, memory and control of attention, impulse or motor function'.

That condition is now called ADH, and this problem has been with us for very many years, under different labels.

I believe it's a genuine ailment. Just because we didn't know anything about it 20/30 years ago doesn't make it any less valid.

However I'm sure there are some cases that have been diagnosed as ADHD when it's just an unruly child, it seems easier to say they suffer from this and escuse their behavior than it is to discipline the child.

Oh... And I get most of my salad, fruit and veggie stuff down the market. Much cheaper, generally tastes the same or better and good for the body if not the soul.

I would agree with Boo's point.

My wife is an ex-Deputy Head of an inner-city school with serious social problems, and Head of a private school with virtually no socail problems. It's not hard to work out which parents looked for evidence of ADHD in children who were simply badly behaved.

I do not for one minute wish to minimise the severity of the condition and the istressing effects on its genuine sufferers, but there are a number of parents who simply use it as a convenient label to encompass bad behaviour which would be eradicated by appropriate discipline.

And there is also some parents who find it another way to claim benefits, if their child has ADHD.

i d think it is a condition however, i think many lazy parents who cannot be bothered with disiplin are to easy to label their kids with a d h d when a doctor has not even diognosed them no they havent got a d h d they are brats due to your lazy parental imput or lack of... but yes there are some kids for whom a d h d is a reconised medical problem

I have 2 year old nephew who screams
and has tantrums if he doesn't get what
he wants ...he has no discipline at all
not even shouted at ...a nightmare ...
so it's all to do with the parents ..

There are genuine cases of ADHD and there always has been.

There are children from very good homes, with well educated and dedicated parents, who have this condition.

There are adults who have it.

To say it doesn't exist and blame bad parenting is an appalling indictment on the genuine sufferers and their families.

i have 2 boys one has it the other has never been a problem both been brought up the same .so its not just down to a lack of parent control

My old neighbours son had it as a child.
They did smoke a lot of dope and do speed during the pregnancy and afterwards.He grew up to be a right little thug.A year ago him and his cousin stabbed an innocent guy to death on the way to work at 7.30 in the morning to steal his ipod.His cousin is serving 15 years and he's serving 10 years as an accessory .Is it an illness yes can you help it ?I don't know .Do i think the drug taking contributed to it ?Well i doubt it helped in any way at all.
