My car was having trouble starting, which I though was the glow plugs, so (whilst saving up to get them replaced) I was having to rev it to get it to go.  Then, the starter motor broke.  I've been told that I caused the starter motor to blow by revving the car... is this true??

As soon as you release the key when you are trying to start your car, the starter motor should disengage, so revving the engine then should have not had any effect on it. I suppose revving the engine while you had the key turned might damage the starter motor somhow, but surely you didnt do that ?
