The one thing that I have noticed that people use more often is churches that are open all through the week for personal devotion or just a quiet place to sit and contemplate. I reckon that people find it hard to find quiet spaces and places in the hectic pace of life (particularly those who live in towns and cities and find it hard to go to some rural location) so an open church fulfills this need to some extent whether people are religious or not. This facility is always used a lot more following natural and human-made disasters by people needing space to contemplate, pray or to try to make sense of things.
