Is my Silver Birch tree dead(ish)?
5 Answers
Hi, I planted a 2 year old Silver Birch tree about 18 months ago and shortly afterwards accidentally damaged about 40% of bark circumference, at the base, with a lawn strimmer. It is a little under 6 feet high but only about the top 3rd has any green growth. The lower branches are just that... bare branches. Has it had its day, or will the lower branches recover? Thanks.

You've damaged 40% of its trunk, thereby reducing it's sap supply to the branches, so it shuts a few down so that it can keep itself alive! Your tree will take stock during the winter, begin to heal the wound and hopefully recover, it maybe a little stunted, but you owe one, so treat it with loving care!
