I'm not being flippant or sarcastic, it is as true as that. Fvourites come down to personal choices, so if you think the Clash are the greatest band ever, then for you they are.
Even though statistically, you will always find more people will vote for The Beatles than any other band, that doesn't make them 'the greatest' just the most popular, which is not the same thing at all. If popularity alone was the issue, then Westlife would be a 'better' band than Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, so straight away the measuring device is seen as faulty.
It is entirely a matter of opinion - your is as valid as mine, or anyone else's.
No funkymoped, that's not the way to measure anything as important as music.
For example, out of approx 60 million people on this island of ours, 59 million of them think Coldplay are a bunch of whining self-important whinging studently cardigan-wearing *******, but .... the other million think they are the saviours of rock and roll, so no, numbers don;t hack it.
Let's face it, if it came to sales, that means The Spice Girls are better than Jeff Buckley, and you don't have to be a fan of either, or indeed neither, to see where the talent, as opposed to the marketing, lies.
Well , when i posted the question , I had read it in an old Mojo - the Clash - The greatest band in the world. It's true i am a fan, as to whether they really were the greatest... I'm not sure. Certainly that run of three singles (Complete Control , Clash City Rockers and White man) really blew me away at the time. Plus when i saw them in 1980 it was the best concert i have seen. It's certainly raised some interesting comments....... Thanx
He's in love with rock and roll woooooooh........Let them know...let......them..... knowwwwww o o o
