what song, in your opinion has the best 'silent pause' in it; where it builds up the suspense and then the music kicks in again? quite dificult to explain but you should know what i'm talking about if you know a song like that. for me i would say the pause in 'I am the resurrection' by the stone roses but also i think radiohead's 'just', has a cool pause in it. agree? disagree?

I don't know about the 'best' but a song that instantly springs to my mind is Will You - Hazel O'Connor.

Halfway through, the song appears to play out to a few seconds of silence, followed by a short drum riff which presages two-plus minutes of what I can only describe as 'haunting' Sax.

What about 'A day in the life' by the beatles
'always' by blink 182 has a quite good one
hell is for heroes' 'slow song' has a killer one. i'm with you on 'just' too. i think breakdowns are becoming more used than the pause.

breakdowns? whats an example of a beakdown?

there's one in virtually every Avenged Sevenfold track. those are mediocre tired breakdowns though.

it's basically the bit where everything changes, like in hardcore music or whatever it usually consists of palm muted chuggy crap and some pinch harmonics and maybe if you're feeling really adventurous some group yells like "YOU CANT BREAK ME" or something like that.

What about .....................................................................................

........................................wait for it...................................................

.............................................................................................................. 'Today' by the Smashing Pumpkins (intro) or

Motorcycle Emptiness MSP (after middle section)

I love the little silent pause in "Novocaine for the soul " by The Eels. It happens around 1m 22 seconds and is a touch of genius.
Green Day, "Waiting" from the Warning CD.
I Wanna Be Me by The Sex Pistols. Great on live versions where the uninitiated audience members start clapping and then get silenced by the wall of noise starting up again...just brilliant.
