Hank Williams' alcoholism was caused by almost constant physical pain, the result of being born with a strain of spina bifida - unknown in the 1950's. It created a downward spiral in his career, as his drinking caused him to miss many concert dates, and his career was in serious decline.
Hank was due to play a couple of live dates - New Year's Eve and New Year's Day 1952. He lay down in the back of his Cadillac as his chauffeur drove the cross-country trip, and Hank tried to sleep, aided by a cocktail of illegal drugs and alcohol, the drugs supplied by a quack doctor Hank had hired to try and get some releif from his pain. When the chauffeur opened the door to tell Hank they had arrived, his employer was already dead and cold. He was 29 years old.
